President Obama Wastes No Time

After a full day of inaugural celebrations, President Obama didnā€™t waste time getting down to business. Even during all the partying, he requested a hold on all Guantanamo Bay prison prosecutions. Today he signed the order to close the detention center, shut down CIA overseas military prisons and review war crime trials. As a reflection of his for the people campaign, Obama set the tone with his White Staff yesterday. ā€œThe White House is the peopleā€™s Houseā€, he said. He laid new ground rules for lobbyists and stricter restrictions such as ban on gifts to administrators. His staff will even sign a contract to abide by these terms. President Obama firmly said that they are to serve peopleā€™s interests, ā€œnot your own, your business or your connectionsā€. To make government accountable, he said that you have to make it transparent. ā€œTransparency and rule of the law will be the touchstone of my presidencyā€. A week later, I'm still pinching myself of images of cries and smiles worldwide congratulating Obama and the United States for several deep reasons: The first and obvious of course is that he's making history as the first African American to live in the White House, the house that was built mostly by the hands of slaves. Second, it's generational. Obama is 46 years old, between the Baby Boomer and Gen X (like myself), he can relate to the My Space, Twitter, Facebook and Blackberry generation. Remember when he announced his VP, Joe Biden, running mate via text messages? That was cool! He even has an account on LinkedIn, a free professional and international online networking tool that connects people. He has 500+ contacts in his network. He's probably tilt the scale as his rolodex entries continue to multiply by the week.
